IRON COUNTY—The West Iron County Fire Department will sponsor an open house in observance of Fire Prevention Week on Monday, Oct. 8, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the West Iron County Fire Hall, located at 641 Ninth Ave. here. All youngsters and adults are welcome.

CASPIAN—A golden anniversary year for the Iron County Historical Museum and Society will begin Saturday, Oct. 13, with a special program honoring Harold and Marcia Bernhardt, founders of the museum, and with a re-enactment of the first organizational meeting.

Neither the threat of recurring rain nor the frost nipping at fingers deterred these youngsters from trying their hand at pumpkin painting during the annual Harvest Fest Sept. 22 in Crystal Falls. Pumpkin and face painting were sponsored by Job’s Daughters.

BATES TOWNSHIP—Bates Township will be erecting a veterans memorial at the Bates Township Cemetery, scheduled for unveiling on Memorial Day 2013. Veterans buried at the cemetery will have their names and military service information engraved on the granite memorial.

Team Northsiders, the two-man team of Lars Anderson (left) and John Detterbeck (right), took top honors at the fourth annual Men Who Cook fundraiser for Iron County Kinship, held at George Young Recreational Complex Sept. 8. Their winning recipe was for Uncle Harry’s Famous Green Chili and Cheesy Corn Bread. Also pictured is Kyle Detterbeck, who assisted the winning team during the three-hour event.
IRON RIVER—Taking top honors at the fourth annual Men Cook fundraiser for Iron County Kinship was Team Northsiders with its tasty Uncle Harry’s Famous Green Chili and Cheesy Corn Bread entrée. Nine teams assembled at George Young Recreational Complex to do culinary battle to raise money for the Kinship program, which provides adult mentoring for young people throughout the county.

IRON RIVER—On Saturday, Sept. 29, at 8:30 a.m., the PW Auxiliary of the First Presbyterian Church will hold its annual fall rummage and bake sale in Fellowship Hall. “Along with all the rummage items, a coffee café will be set up so you can have our wonderful special, a cinnamon roll and coffee for only $1. You will be able to shop in comfort and enjoy some homemade goodies at the same time,” said Marilyn Budzak.

CASPIAN—The third annual Iron County Historical Museum super sale rummage fundraiser will open the doors on Friday, Sept. 21, at 10 a.m. “Our museum resale round-up is on now. Those wishing to donate resalable large and small ‘non-clothing’ goods to our sale, may bring them in any weekday, Monday through Thursday, from noon to 4 p.m. to the Iron County Museum, 100 Brady Ave., Caspian,” said a spokesperson for the rummage committee.
