IRON RIVER — After a spectacular season of basketball, the Lady Wykons are competing impressively in track and field.
Led by senior standout Danica Shamion, whose leadership is both by example and focus, and buoyed by familiar names such as Seanna Stine, Lilyanna DeSousa, Sidney Storti and Haiden Gill, the girls track team under the leadership of Coach Kristi Berutti is working hard and seeing results.

In the most recent meet, the Wykons traveled to Marquette April 30 and despite stiff competition finished well.  Many of the Wykons posted season bests, a clear indication they are, as they did in basketball, gaining momentum as the season progresses.

“We had 16 PR’s [personal records] and all four relay teams ran faster than in the previous meets,” Berutti said.

Just as the girls did in basketball, they run competitively, are not afraid to work hard and are goal-oriented

In Marquette, Shamion placed second overall in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, and first in the high jump and 400-meter dash. The team also saw teammates Stine (fourth in 100-meter hurdles), Storti (fourth in discus), and the 4-by-100 meter relay team of DeSousa, Lacey Shamion, Cheyenne Ritchie and Rowyn Fiszer (third place) work hard to keep the Wykons competitive.

With two meets per week scheduled for the remainder of the season, the pattern of improvement should bode well for their performance at the Upper Peninsula Finals June 1.
