Spring population estimates on Chicaugon Lake

DNR fisheries electroshocking boats worked the shoreline of Chicaugon Lake on May 13.  The boats are equipped with boom shockers that extend off the front, nets, live wells and any other field equipment needed.
CRYSTAL FALLS—Spring spawning is the time to check population estimates by collecting data on area waters. It’s cold. It’s wet. It’s part of the job for the DNR fisheries division. It’s part of the experience for the volunteers that assist them in the field.

CRYSTAL FALLS—Total Woman in the Outdoors is a unique event that is growing in popularity at Bewabic State Park.
Evening activities are hosted by NorthStar Health System and offer many different experiences for women to enjoy the outdoors.

 
DNR awards deer habitat grants to nine Upper Peninsula conservation organizations

MARQUETTE—Nine Upper Peninsula conservation organizations will receive Deer Habitat Improvement Partnership Initiative (DHIPI) grants from the Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Division in 2014.

Iron Conservation District welcomes summer

CRYSTAL FALLS—Summer has finally come to Iron County, and the Iron Conservation District has welcomed Debbie Bendick and Don James as summer staff members. Bendick joins as a summer office assistant, and James joins as a Clean Boats Clean Waters (CBCW) boat washer operator.

The harvest of this wild turkey by Andrew Papatriantafyllou in the Sunset Lake area began on the morning of May 10 with the use of a turkey call. “I called him in from over 300 yards; had him running down the pipeline.” He was using a custom glass friction call. “He ended up walking behind me. I turned him back my way using cutts and purrs.” The shot was made at 8:10 a.m. at 23 yards with a Beneli M2 20 gauge. The bird weighed 20-pounds, had a 9-inch beard and 1-inch spurs.
