The city of Gaastra’s sports park was officially named Elmer “Swede” Anderson Memorial Park during ceremonies held on Memorial Day. Anderson, who died in 2007, was Gaastra’s mayor for years and a West Iron baseball coach, but he is legendary as “Elmer the Great,” the pitcher who baffled batters far and wide for many years during the late 1940s and early ‘50s, twice striking out 23 batters in a nine-inning game. (The Major League record is 20.) Anderson’s family gathered for the ceremony, including Dorothy Anderson, his wife of 59 years, who wears his “How Swede It Is” cap and holds the plaque that will hang on the park building in back.
