Contemp Center adds new aide

Melanie Bess-Haight is the new administrative assistant for the Contemporary Center in Crystal Falls. She came on board in December and will be helping out as the non-profit organization works to add new programs.

Skiers prepare for a day on the slopes at Crystella Ski Hill in Crystal Falls Saturday. Weekend snow brought skiers, snowboarders and sledding enthusiasts out to enjoy the renovated facilities.

IR woman wins second state crown

Katelyn Spitza, 18, of Iron River was named Miss Michigan International 2013 in January. Spitza was Miss Teen Michigan International for 2012.

New IR boutique trying to create a new look

Hannah Hoffman shows off some of the name brand clothing for sale at Hannah’s Threads. The 16-year-old entrepreneur opened the store in December and stocks gently used clothes by American Eagle, Express, Forever 21, Calvin Klein and more. The store is located at 305 N. 2nd St in the same building as Stitch in Time.
IRON RIVER—    A 16-year-old Lower Michigan girl is owner of Iron River’s newest clothing boutique.

 
Local writer wins award

IRON RIVER--Rick Kent, a resident of Iron County and a member of the Iron River Writers Guild, recently received notification of his third place prize in the prestigious Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition.
It is considered the premier short story competition in the country.

 
Winterfest, snowmobile hill climb postponed

While snow events are being postponed, ice events are still taking place. Owen Nowak, 6, spend a chilly day on the ice Jan. 19 during the Jig It ice fishing extravaganza.
CASPIAN—Winterfest events here have been rescheduled for Feb. 16.
