CRYSTAL FALLS—The popular Bass Festival, sponsored by the Crystal Falls Lions Club, will be held July 5-8.
Events get under way on Thursday, July 5, with bingo at the Nylund Building on Superior Avenue.
That’s also the scene on Friday for Nylund’s annual boxing invitational at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 5:30, said organizers.
Highlighting Saturday’s event is the popular Bass Festival parade down Superior Avenue at 10 a.m., followed by the canoe races on the Paint River at 11:30.
At noon, the community picnic featuring a chicken barbeque dinner will start activities at Runkle Lake Park on the east end of town. Also on the menu will be burgers, brats and drinks.
The volleyball tournament begins at noon, and caricature drawings will be held throughout the day.
From 2 to 6 p.m., it’s music by Groove Northwill.
The Great Lakes Timber Show, featuring a log rolling contest, will be held Saturday at Runkle Lake.
There will also be a mechanical bull ride for all ages Saturday at Runkle Lake Park.
A bounce house for kids will also be available.
The annual Duck Race, sponsored by the Crystal Falls Business Association, gets under way at 1 p.m. Raffle tickets are available at Tall Pines, Winks Woods, Ben Franklin, IGA/Jubilee Foods, Alpha General Store, Crystal Bait & Sport Marine and Sommers Sausage Shop and Deli.
Only 1,500 tickets will be sold. First prize is $1,000 and second prize is $500. Five prizes of $100 will also be awarded. Additional prizes will be drawn on race day, said organizers.
The traditional softball battle between the Wops and Swedes begins at 7:30 at the ball field.
Activities begin Sunday with a pancake breakfast at the VFW Post on Superior Avenue from 7 a.m. to noon.
The renowned Run Your Bass Off and Half Bass cross country races and the Fun Walk begin at 9 a.m. at Runkle Lake on Sunday. Registration is 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. the day of the race.
Soft drinks and fruit will be served after the race. The course starts and finishes at Runkle Lake Park.
“Rain or shine, we run,” said organizers. “No refund.”

Registration fee for the 10K and Half Bass 3.6 mile run is $20 for adults, $15 for teens (ages 14-19) and $10 for children (ages 9-13). There is a late fee of $5 for registration after June 30.
Registration fee for the two-mile noncompetitive fun walk is $10.
The community picnic and volleyball tournament continue at noon at Runkle Lake Park. There will also be concessions with food and refreshments (brats, hamburgers, hot dogs, pop, coffee and other refreshments, said organizers).
The baby contest, for children 3 and under, and the horseshoe tournament begin at 1 p.m. with kids’ games at 2.
Ironland Band entertains the crowds from 2 to 6 p.m.
Fish contest judging takes place at 3:30 p.m.
Rules, regulations and registration forms are available at Michi-Aho Motel, DJ’s Sport & Marine, and Crystal Bait shop.
All fish must be brought back at the bait shop to be weighed “before they are frozen,” said organizers.
