After an impressive offensive display in their first game of the season against Ishpeming, the Wykons have dropped the last two games and now are in possession of an 0 and 3 record.

Losses against Gwinn on December 1st, by a score of 66 to 36, and Westwood on Dec. 4, 71 to 17, have the Wykons needing to regroup if they are going to be competitive.

While the Westwood game ended in a lopsided loss, the Wykons played a strong first quarter and were tied at 11 before being outscored 22 to 9 in the second quarter to head into halftime down 33 to 20. “It was a tough game,” stated Coach Cade Contreras, “Westwood did a good job of pressuring us and forcing turnovers.”  In addition to the turnovers, the Wykons struggled to get quality shots, were challenged at the free throw line and had defensive lapses which led to too many opposition points inside the paint.

Once again this year the Wykons will go the way of Elijah Oberlin. When Oberlin has a breakout game, the team will be in the mix. When he does not, the team will be challenged to compete. His 20 points against Westwood are an indicator of his ability to keep the team in the game while his slow second half against Westwood brought the offense of the Wykons to a halt.

Jonah Holmberg and Abel Lundin have shown moments of greatness already this season and both have the ability to contribute. Holmberg chipped in nine points in the loss to Gwinn while Abel Lundin scored five.

Coach Contreras spoke highly of Lundin despite the team’s challenges, “He hustled very hard and I am always happy with his performance.”
