IRON RIVER — The Lady Wykon tennis team played its first season under a new coach and had plenty of honors to show they didn’t miss a shot.
Aubrey Bice was named Upper Peninsula Player of the Year.
“Aubrey had an outstanding season,” said Coach Jen Schive. “She played some strong competitors this season, but was very focused and strategic in her points.  She knows how to figure out her competition, and once she does that it’s game, set, match.”
Sienna Stine, an outstanding multi-sport athlete was named All-UP First Team Singles.
“Sienna had an excellent season,” Schive said. “With each match, she struck the ball more confidently. She was determined to do well and she did just that.  She improved her basic techniques, taking them to the senior level, and took care of her competition confidently.”
Kaitlyn Smith was named UP Honorable Mention for singles.
“Kaitlyn grew leaps and bounds this season,” Schive said. “With each match, she became more confident and focused on her abilities. She is a strong tennis player, a competitor, and a hustler.”
Rounding out honors for the Wykons was the All UP Honorable Mention Doubles team of Olivia LaMay and Destiny Lemery.
“Olivia and Destiny had some very strong competition this year,” Schive said. “I feel that they grew tremendously as a team. Their peak performances came as the season ended, and with each tough competition came leaps and bounds of improvement on their part.  They each come to the court with their technique. Destiny comes with power, Olivia brings her net shots, and both improve their placement.”
With her first year of coaching under her belt, the special education teacher by day and tennis coach by night can be proud of the effort her Wykons made and is looking to build upon their success next Fall.
