IRON RIVER — The West Iron football team dropped its final game of the season to the 1–7 Gwinn Modeltowners 27–6, ending on Oct. 20 when the Wykons lost a game they were hoping would be an opportunity to salvage the season.
Both the Wykons and Modeltowners entered the game with one victory and  saw the game as a way to establish momentum going into the offseason. Unfortunately for the home crowd, the Wykons offense did not get on track and the Modeltowners took advantage of the Wykon defense.
West Iron had a season rife with injuries and struggled to find ways to score. Players were asked to shift positions on a regular basis to cover the field, and the challenges were too many to overcome.
Wykon Coach Mike Berutti looked forward rather than back after the final game.
“The kids played hard,” he said. “Our focus will be on the weight room for the next nine months. I wish the best of luck to our six seniors who helped bring football back to Friday nights.”
Although the season ended with just one victory, the Wykons were able to reestablish their program after two years of non-play. This important step should be recognized as a victory and the team will have an abundance of returning players next fall.
Seniors who played their last game for the Wykons include Ryan Walker (No. 88), Noah DeSousa (No. 75), Anthony Sucholl (No. 68), Tyler Raatz (No. 56), Lane Norman (No. 55) and Colton Holm (No. 11).
