IRON RIVER/CRYSTAL FALLS — The first round of the district volleyball playoffs started on Monday, Oct. 30. Forest Park is slated to take on Ironwood in the first round while the Lady Wykons will match up against the winner of the Hancock/Ishpeming game on Nov. 1. Both teams have had outstanding seasons and both are ready to make a run.
Heading into the final week of the regular season, the Forest Park Lady Trojan volleyball team is ranked ninth in the state in Division Four by the Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association. Despite losing a close game to Kingsford in their second-to-last match of the season, the Trojans will head into the postseason with their best record in many years and with the goal of capturing the elusive state championship — which they came one game short of last year.
The West Iron Wykons finished their regular season on Oct. 24 with a loss at Houghton. They sport an 8–5 record and had three players who earned All Conference for the West Pac.
Danica Shamion earned First Team All Conference while Haiden Gill and Lily DeSousa were named Second Team. The trio has been instrumental in carrying the team this year and were recognized by the conference coaches in their annual all-conference voting.
