The West Iron Lady Wykons, after a recent streak of two losses, stormed back this week with two solid victories. With these wins their record improved to 7–9 on the season.

The Wykon success can be attributed to the ability of Coach Eric Shamion to get the entire team involved in the effort. In both games, the Wykons saw multiple members of the team scoring and as a result the points piled up quickly.
On Feb. 2, the Wykons took on the Purple Hornets of L’Anse and came away with an impressive 61–38 victory. Hitting the floor aggressively from the opening jump, the Wykons scored 16 first-quarter points to establish a lead and did not let up. Their advantage by halftime was 35–24. In an impressive half of basketball, West Iron scored six three-pointers as five players dropped a shot from behind the arc.

The second half was all Wykons as they built their lead and never let up on defense.

Shamion was pleased to get his team back on track.

“We had a quality team victory, with eight kids in the scoring column,” he said. “Everyone had some playing time in both halves and we got good contributions from all the kids.”

Three days later, on Feb. 5 the Lady Wykons had seven players score and easily tamed the Hancock Bulldogs, 58–30 for their second victory in a row.

Once again West Iron got out to a strong start, scoring 19 points in the first quarter. Five Wykons got on the board in the first frame and this put the Bulldogs on notice it was not going to be an easy night. While Hancock countered with 10, the trajectory of the night was established and West Iron did not look back. Heading into the half the Wykons were up 32–18.

“We had a good win on senior night,” Shamion said. “We played with more energy and determination than Hancock. Our zone defense really held their offense in check and we only gave up one fourth-quarter point. I like the effort the girls are playing with. We need to continue to play with grit to be successful.”
