BATES TOWNSHIP—Trustees here voted Jan. 9 to update the township garage, which has been without heat for nearly two weeks, Supervisor Grant Helgemo said. The heater is outdated and noisy, Helgemo told supervisors during the monthly meeting. Some circuit boards in the controller are obsolete.

IRON RIVER—Organizers for The IronLine dog sled race are moving ahead with hopes of snow in the forecast. The new winter event for Iron County will take place on Jan. 18-19, with the opening race ceremonies beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday in the downtown Iron River area.

IRON RIVER— Work at Nelson Field has been given the go-ahead after the project won approval for a Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund grant. A $49,900 grant for accessibility improvements was approved for 2014, according to a press release.
