Lexi hits #2,000 as Trojans roll

Here’s the big moment: Forest Park’s Lexi Gussert (22) watches her shot soar to the basket early in the fourth quarter against Kingsford Dec. 13, scoring her 2,000th high school point. Teammates nearby are Kendra Campbell (15) and Sam Nylund (25).
CRYSTAL FALLS—All the waiting and counting ended about a minute into the fourth quarter of Forest Park’s home game with Kingsford Dec. 13.
Lexi Gussert got the ball just left of the basket near the free throw lane and put up a one-handed shot. Up and in, like so many before.

IRON RIVER—A big second quarter got West Iron’s boys season off on the right foot at Westwood Dec. 9, and the Wykons defeated the Patriots 55-43 in their only game last week.

IRON COUNTY—Boys basketball season opens on the road this week for both West Iron County and Forest Park. The Wykons visited Westwood Dec. 9 in their only game. Forest Park has a pair of Skyline Conference games away: at Mid Peninsula on Dec. 9 and at Republic-Michigamme on Dec. 12.

 
Hancock gets past Wykon girls

IRON RIVER—For eight minutes, things went pretty well for West Iron County’s girls team in its basketball season opener at Hancock Dec 3.
And then . . . the Bulldogs started hitting some shots while West Iron struggled from the floor, eventually losing to Hancock 48-39 in the season opener for both teams. It was WIC’s only game last week.

CRYSTAL FALLS—Forest Park’s girls team opened its new season last week, visiting two teams that Coach Jeff Syrjanen had expressed some concern about beforehand.

 
Girls basketball starts this week

IRON COUNTY—The ball goes up on the 2013-14 girls basketball season this Tuesday, Dec. 3.
And while all this week’s games will be away, Iron County fans get to see both teams on their home floor before long: Forest Park and West Iron County will both play twice at home next week.

Aggies end Trojans’ year with state semifinal loss

MARQUETTE—You have heard it so many times: To defeat an elite opponent, you have to play mistake-free.
Beal City did just that at the Superior Dome here Nov. 23 in the Division 8 state semifinals. Forest Park did not. Beal City moves on to the state finals this Friday. Forest Park packs away the gear until late next summer.
