IRON RIVER—For most U.P. cities, the first sign of fall comes in early August when football players report to practice for the fall season.
 But Iron River gets a three-week jump on everyone else next week when the annual Iron County Football Camp takes place at West Iron County High School. The camp runs from July 16 to 18.

CRYSTAL FALLS—Talk about a nice way to end a season!
 The First National Bank squad in the Senior League finished its season June 29 with a 9-5 win over North Country, in a game played at Runkle Lake Park.
 When the teams met earlier this season, North Country won in a game shortened by the mercy rule. Revenge was sweet, made sweeter by winning pitcher Joel Van Lanen, who hit a three-run home run to insure the win.

IRON RIVER—Dina Mia completed a perfect season in Iron County Little League last week, winning the Schwedler Memorial Cup with a 6-3 win over VFW at Bachman Park.

CRYSTAL FALLS—Boxing Night at Nylund’s has quickly become an action highlight of the summer season in Iron River, and the seventh annual Nylund’s Invitational is all set to go this Friday, July 6, as part of the Bass Festival.

On target! With interested spectators watching closely in back, Caspian-Gaastra firefighters finish their run in the five-man coupling race by hitting the target with the stream from the hose.
CRYSTAL FALLS—If the results of the county firefighters’ tournament mean anything, watch out for the Caspian-Gaastra Fire Department at next month’s U.P. tournament.
 Caspian-Gaastra claimed first place at the county tournament, held here on June 16, winding up with 35 points, ahead of both Crystal Falls (29) and West Iron County (27).

MARQUETTE—Some of the seniors who starred for Forest Park and West Iron County’s football teams last fall will play their final high school game this Saturday, June 30, when the U.P. All-Star Football Game is played at the Superior Dome here.
 The game kicks off at 3 p.m. Eastern Time.

IRON RIVER—West Iron County grad Tanner Mayo can say he has reached the ultimate heights of his athletic career—by nearing the heights in ultimate, the sport that’s a mix of football, soccer and Frisbee.
 Mayo was a member of the North Park College team that finished third in the Division 3 College Open ultimate championships, held May 19-20 in Appleton, Wis.

IRON RIVER—Several West Iron athletes have been selected to the all-U.P. boys tennis team, which was named recently by the U.P. coaches’ association.
