Italians get offensive, swamp Swedes 23-10

Raise a glass of chianti to the Italians, who dominated the Swedes 23-10 at the annual Wop-Swede Game, played at Runkle Lake Park July 12. CRYSTAL FALLS—In 2013, the annual Wop-Swede softball game lasted 12 grueling innings before the Italians eked out an 13-11 win. It was one of the closest games ever in the storied ethnic rivalry.

 
25 teams join in scramble

CHICAUGON LAKE—Twenty-five teams took part in NorthStar Health System Volunteer Services’ 23rd annual Going for the Green 18-hole golf scramble, held June 20 at George Young Recreational Complex.

And they’re off! Heading out from the starting line, runners began the 5K and 10K Run Your Bass Off race in Crystal Falls on July 13 as part of the local celebration.

Fourth annual Windsor Rodeo Run set July 19

IRON RIVER—The Windsor Center is sponsoring the fourth annual Rodeo Run on Saturday, July 19.
The race begins and ends behind the Windsor Center. The two mile run/walk, the 5K run and the 10K run all start at 8 a.m.

 
Soccer Association catches World Cup fever

Action is always fast and furious at the soccer fields in Gaastra where teams in the Iron River Soccer Association battle, like in this game last August. The new season will start on July 14, and the teams will follow a World Cup theme this year.

GAASTRA—As apparent to anyone with a television, the World Cup is just about everywhere the last 2½ weeks. The world’s most important and most popular soccer event, which takes place every four years, has been televised in its entirety on ESPN and ABC, with wall-to-wall coverage every day since the tournament started on June 12.

Honoring ‘Swede’ PDF Print E-mail

The city of Gaastra’s sports park was officially named Elmer “Swede” Anderson Memorial Park during ceremonies held on Memorial Day. Anderson, who died in 2007, was Gaastra’s mayor for years and a West Iron baseball coach, but he is legendary as “Elmer the Great,” the pitcher who baffled batters far and wide for many years during the late 1940s and early ‘50s, twice striking out 23 batters in a nine-inning game. (The Major League record is 20.) Anderson’s family gathered for the ceremony, including Dorothy Anderson, his wife of 59 years, who wears his “How Swede It Is” cap and holds the plaque that will hang on the park building in back.
