Audubon meeting on loons May 12

CASPIAN—Dr. Jay Mager of Ohio Northern University is returning to Iron County to present another program on loons at the May 12 meeting of the Audubon Society at the Iron County Museum starting at 7 p.m..

 
Angler input sought on experimental trout regulations in Upper Peninsula

MARQUETTE—The DNR’s Fisheries Division is seeking information from anglers to help evaluate the Upper Peninsula’s experimental trout regulations.
Just as in 2013, anglers will have the opportunity to harvest 10 brook trout per day on five Upper Peninsula stream segments during the 2014 trout season.

 
Tough conditions will greet anglers as trout season begins

The Iron River just off U.S. 2 west of town is a favorite trout fishing spot because of its deep, cold waters. With the opening of trout season on Aril 26, fishermen hope that all the snow will have left the banks and the water will be open.

CRYSTAL FALLS—Hearty folks abound in the Upper Peninsula, undeterred by the sometimes harsh weather as they go about their day-to-day lives.
Certainly local trout fisherman belong in this category. And their passion for their sport will burst forth again as trout season opens April 26 and gets going for another year.

The Forest Park Environmental Science class went to the Listening Inn on March 26 to collect data on mammals. The students crosscountry skied through the trails, stopping to collect data on mammal tracks. Students observed coyote, fisher, shrew, deer, snowshoe hare and one wolf track. Student scientists used the stride, straddle, track length and width along with other spoor to identify the mammals. Carol and Les Kuhfal, owners of the Listening Inn, welcomed students to their log cabin inn on Clark Road near Amasa. They encourage other student groups to come out and explore nature. ‘Ask the DNR’ to air on WNMU-TV Channel 13 on Thursday, April 17

MARQUETTE—“Ask the DNR” returns to WNMU-TV Channel 13 on Thursday, April 17, at 8 p.m. (EDT). The show will focus on the trout fishing opener and fishing regulations; spring wildlife activity; and wildfire prevention.
