Chicaugon Lake Assn. to hold meeting

CRYSTAL FALLS—Chicaugon Lake Association wants to remind everyone that its regularly scheduled meeting for Monday, Aug. 20, has been changed to Wednesday, Aug. 22, at George Young Recreational Complex at 6 p.m.

 Largemouth bass are an exception to that trend and are becoming a more popular local fishery.

CASPIAN--The Lee Leblanc Chapter of the Audubon Society will meet at 7 p.m.. Monday Aug. 13 at the Iron County Museum in Caspian.
 Mike Holmes of, Iron Mountain, retired DNR officer and long-time apiarist will give a presentation on bee keeping and honey making. 
 Holmes speaks of the challenges and satisfactions of keeping bees and the health benefits of consuming local honey.
 The meeting is free and open to the public.  Everyone is welcome to attend.   

 
WU to construct a handicap accessible hunting trailer

IRON COUNTY—Wildlife Unlimited of Iron County is looking for community support and donations to help offset the cost of constructing their own handicap accessible hunting trailer. In the recent past, Wildlife Unlimited borrowed a trailer from the Wheelin’ Sportsmen group of Delta County, who pioneered this project in their area. The Wildlife Unlimited hunting trailer committee hopes to raise matching funds to offset the expected $10,000 cost of constructing a locally custom modified trailer

 
ICD conducting boat washing at area lakes

IRON COUNTY—In an effort to prevent the spread of aquatic hitchhikers, the Iron Conservation District is providing free boat washing to the public as part of the Clean Boats Clean Waters program made possible through funding administered by the USDA Forest Service by a grant provided by the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.

 
POOFLA to meet at Fortune Lake

CRYSTALL FALLS—The Property Owners of Fortune Lakes Association (POOFLA) will hold their annual meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 7 at 7 p.m. in the dining hall at the Fortune Lake Lutheran Bible Camp.
 On the agenda will be the election of the president and secretary; update of the public access on Route-2; information about invasive species on Fortune Lake and surrounding lakes; and recent information regarding the lake level and aquifer tapping of Indian Lake.

CRYSTAL FALLS—Veteran outdoor writer/photographer Richard P. Smith from Marquette will be doing a book signing at Syrjanen’s Ben Franklin in Crystal Falls on Friday, Aug. 3 in conjunction with the Humongous Fungus Festival. He will have many of his books and two DVDs he’s produced at a table in front of the store from noon to 5 p.m.

MARQUETTE—The Michigan Wildlife Conservancy (MWC), a non-profit organization based in Bath near Lansing, recently confirmed the presence of a cougar in southern Marquette County.
 The cougar was photographed by a cased and padlocked trail camera on private property on June 1.

 
Volunteer needed to help kids at U.P. State Fair

ESCANABA—The annual Upper Peninsula State Fair – one of Michigan’s summer highlights – is right around the corner, and the Michigan DNR is seeking more than 100 volunteers Aug. 13-19 to help to make it happen.
