Wolf hunting licenses sold quickly

MARQUETTE— On Saturday, Sept. 28, at noon EDT (11 a.m. CDT), the Michigan DNR wolf hunting licenses went on sale. A total of 1,200 licenses were available for purchase.

IRON RIVER—The Iron County Ducks Unlimited Committee has announced that the 35th annual DU banquet will be held at the George Young Recreational Complex on Saturday, Oct. 26, starting at 5:30 p.m.

‘Ask the DNR’ to air on WNMU-TV Ch. 13 on Thursday, Oct. 3

MARQUETTE— “Ask the DNR” returns to WNMU-TV Channel 13 in the Upper Peninsula Thursday, Oct. 3, at 8 p.m. (EDT). The episode will focus on fall hunting and fishing opportunities and regulations.

Wildlife Unlimited of Iron County youth hunters and mentors gather at the Crystella Ski Hill following the opening morning of the Michigan Youth Hunt on Saturday, Sept. 21. According to Youth Hunt chairman, Scott Westphal, there were 27 young hunters who participated in this year’s program. Thirteen of those were first time hunters. At the end of the two day hunt, Sept. 21-22, 14 deer had been harvested, of which four were does and 10 were bucks. The two pictured, with their whitetails, are Ciara Donati of Iron River with a spikehorn, and Ryan Peterson of Iron River, with an 8-pointer. Donati’s WU mentor was Darin Long. Peterson’s WU mentor was Kevin Nocerini. Each youth is paired with a local hunter involved in the WU Youth Hunt program. Youths are taken to the Alpha Rifle and Pistol Club shooting range for practice prior to the hunt. Each of the young hunters is placed, with their mentor, on a WU wildlife food plot or associated properties in the county. See this week’s Outdoors p­­age for more youth hunt photos. Aaron Cimarelli, 10, took advantage of the Michigan Youth Mentor program and bagged a nice doe on Saturday, Sept. 21, while hunting with his dad, Mike. He was using a CVA Scout 7mm .08 and made a single shot from 65 yards. Aaron has been hunting for three years and is still aiming for a buck. He was congratulated by his mom, Teresa, and Jake the dog for taking a doe without fawns and making a good shot. (Cimarelli photo)

Logan McCord, 8, of Iron River shot his first-ever buck on Saturday, Sept. 21 in the Youth Mentor Hunt while hunting with his dad, David. The youth harvested the 3-pointer just before his mother, Sarah, got a bear. Sarah McCord shot a 210-pound bear just minutes after her son, Logan, had gotten his buck. They were hunting a couple hundred yards apart. The McCords had an exciting day of hunting. (McCord photo)

DNR removes nuisance bears from Iron River

IRON RIVER—Conservation officers with the DNR have removed six bears from the Franklin Street area in Iron River during the past week. Officers removed the first bear from a live trap on Sept.13 and another bear on Sept. 16.

Friday the 13th proved to be lucky for Robbie Ivey, who took a black bear in the Crystal Falls area. He took a 60-yard shot while hunting from the Wildlife Unlimited trailer blind. He downed the black bear at about 6 p.m. Robbie was accompanied by hunting partners Dave Painter and Brad Kaiser along with Kristi West, who was shooting video. This was the second hunting location the group set up at in order for Robbie to get his bear. The Wildlife Unlimited of Iron County specially designed trailer is available for use by disabled/handicapped hunters. IRON RIVER— Michigan DNR law enforcement officers and wildlife staff are working to address multiple reports of nuisance bears in Iron River, and are asking for the public’s help in removing any potential food sources that may be attracting the bears.
