Estimated at about 90 years old and measured at 71 feet in height, the blue spruce just harvested from the Waaras’ yard is carefully brought to the street by equipment from Hebert Construction. Next stop: the state Capitol in Lansing.
IRON RIVER—With some snow from the night before adding a seasonal touch, Iron River residents got to take part in a genuine media event Nov. 6 when the state Capitol Christmas tree was harvested from the Waara family yard on Maple Street.

Ski Brule opens for the season

IRON RIVER—Ski Brule opened for skiing and snowboarding on Nov. 8. Open terrain includes Log Jam and Bunny Trails, serviced by Big Bear Chairlift and Bambi Rope Tow. Ski Brule is open Friday through Sundays and closed midweek for snowmaking until Nov. 22, when daily operations begin.

IRON RIVER—During its Oct. 21 monthly meeting, the West Iron County School Board authorized Superintendent Chris Thomson to have IDI of Marquette go ahead with designing changes to the student drop-off/pickup area at Stambaugh Elementary School.

Just before their final home game of the year Oct. 29, Forest Park’s volleyball team presented a check for $650 to the Iron County Cancer Unit, proceeds of its cancer fundraiser. Throughout October, members of the varsity and JV teams sold pink paper volleyballs that were signed and later displayed in the gym. IRON COUNTY—The Michigan State Police reported a fatal  car-pedestrian crash involving a police vehicle from the Iron County Sheriff’s Department on Oct. 31 at 11:05 a.m. on M-69 and Hope Mine Road in Mansfield Township. The pedestrian, Harold Foucault, 91, was from Crystal Falls. No further information will be available as the crash remains under investigation.
Assisting at the scene of the crash was the Michigan State Police Motor Carrier Division, Crystal Falls Police and Fire Department, DNR Conservation Division, Northstar EMS, and Michigan State Police Advanced Accident Investigators.
