Pete Gasperini claimed first place in the spring poker tournament, hosted recently by the Caspian-Gaastra Fire Department. Gasperini was presented with a check for $480 by Assistant Chief Matt Jacks. Fifty players competed in the tournament, with prize money awarded to the final 10. All proceeds from the event will go to kids programs, fire-prevention programs and other community events. The next tournament is set for 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 12.

MASTODON TOWNSHIP—On Wednesday March 12, Iron County 911 received a report of a vehicle theft from a residence on Camp 5 Road in Mastodon Township. The victim had the vehicle warming in his driveway when it was stolen.

EAST LANSING— The Forest Park Lady Trojans advanced to the Class D state championship game with a 49-33 victory over Athens in the state semifinals Thursday at the Breslin Center on the campus of Michigan State University. The top-ranked Lady Trojans will take their 26-0 record into the finals where they will face unranked Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart (21-5) on Saturday at 9 a.m. (CST). Forest Park is seeking its first girls basketball state championship in school history. Iron County Reporter’s Sports Editor Peter Nocerini will be on hand covering the action.
The game will be televised on Fox Sports Detroit.

Gussert’s star shines for all to see

After the game, Lexi makes time to pose with some young fans and autographs a souvenir ball for other well-wishers.
CRYSTAL FALLS— The signs were there early, like when Lexi Gussert was a toddler.
After the future Forest Park star had learned to walk, her grandmother gave her a doll and a stroller. Gussert took a look at the stroller and thought she’d keep that. But the doll, well, not interested.
So little Lexi chucked the doll and grabbed a basketball, put it in the stroller and began walking the ball around.
So began Gussert’s path to glory.

Baumgartner returns home

Nick Baumgartner is glad to be back home after taking part in the Winter Olympics at Sochi, Russia, last month.
IRON RIVER—On a dark, country highway, one of the world’s top athletes is driving home, alone. It’s after midnight and he’s been through a lot.
In the last two days Nick Baumgartner has seen his dream of an Olympic medal vanish, he’s felt the self-imposed burden of expectations crush down on his spirit. and he’s toiled through an exhausting 25-hour journey from Russia to Germany to Chicago and to Green Bay, watching one movie after another to pass the time.
