CRYSTAL FALLS—How will the U.P.’s strongest men do under a roof?
The U.P. Strongman Competition takes place this Saturday, Aug. 3, starting at noon, and for the first time the event will be held at the Nylund Food Center on Superior Avenue here.
From its start, the event had been held on the Runkle Lake Park softball diamond, but fears of rain prompted organizers to put the event under a roof.
Competitors in weightlifting events routinely chalk up their hands to remove moisture before they attempt a lift, and anything more than a drizzle would make a strongman event impossible to hold.
Rain threatened the 2012 contest. It held off until after the event, but organizers decided not to risk an outdoor event again.
The event is still open to spectators. The entry fee is $3, and all proceeds will be donated to the Forest Park football program. Full concessions will be available.
Competition will be in four men’s divisions and an open women’s division. The men’s divisions are featherweight (175 pounds), lightweight (200), middleweight (230) and heavyweight (over 230).
The events include a farmer’s carry, an overhead lift medley, a grip roller, stone over bar-rock lift and a medley event—sandbag, Conan wheel and tire chain lift. The grip roller is new this year.
This year’s tiebreaker will be a deadlift hold. A women’s bench press event will also be held.
The weigh-in starts at 8 a.m. Pre-registration is $20, and the fee is $25 at the door. Competitors must be 16 or older—minors need parental consent.
To pre-register or pre-try events, contact Jim Butler (875-4266), Bill Santilli (875-6020) or Lee Nylund (875-4296).
