D2 regional crown to WIC girls; boys second PDF Print E-mail

IRON RIVER—When the Division 2 U.P. Finals track meet takes place June 1 in Kingsford, fans will be seeing plenty of blue and white.
West Iron County’s track teams made sure of that during the regional tournament at Westwood High School on May 16, with the Wykon girls team easily claiming first place in the team standings and the boys team earning runner-up honors.
The Wykon girls had another excellent day, finishing with 77 points. Hancock (32) was a distant second place, and Westwood (29) was third.
The girls team won all four relay races and seven individual events. Two girls won two events each: Victoria Hoogenboom in both distance runs (1600 and 3200) and Megan Miatech in both throwing events (discus and shot put).
Other individual winners were Cassilyn Pellizzer in the 300 low hurdles, Kylee Erickson in the 400 and Alexis Golfis in long jump.
In all, 12 individuals qualified in 18 events. Pellizzer will take part in three individual events, and Hoogenboom, Erickson, Miatech and Carli Johnson are in two each.
Including relays, Pellizzer, Erickson and Johnson are in four events each, and Hoogenboom, Casey Harrington, Rebekah Serbinski and Elizabeth Pellizzer are in three. So is Brianna Lambert, who qualified in three relays. Five girls are in two relays.

The WIC boys team ended up in second place in the team score with 47 points, eight points behind first place Ishpeming (55). Hancock (41) was third.
The Wykons got wins from Tyler Stafford in the 100-meter dash and from its two sprint relay teams, the 400 and 800.
The team had 11 individuals qualify in 14 different events, along with all four relays. Stafford, Clint Brendel and Colton Pangrazzi all qualified in two individual events.
Including the relays, Stafford, Ryan Rogers and Brendel will each be in four events at the U.P. Finals, while Pangrazzi, Nik Thoney and Andrew Peterson are in three.
Rogers will take part in three relays, and four teammates are in two relays.

Coming up: It’s a short season, and it’s nearly over. The Wykons host the West Pac Conference meet at Nelson Field on May 22. After a JV meet at Norway on May 28, the season ends at the U.P. Finals June 1.
