IRON RIVER—Seasonal road restrictions will be implemented Wednesday, March 27, according to Iron County Road Commission Superintendent Doug Tomasoski.
The restriction bars vehicles weighing five tons or more from hauling loads on designated roadways.
“We do this to protect the roads,” Tomasoski said. “This is the time of the year when the frost starts to come out of the ground, and it causes roads to heave. Weight restrictions protect the roads from repetitious heavy loads.”
The restrictions apply to all county roads that are not specifically exempt.
Roads exempt from weight restrictions include: Forest Highway 16 from U.S. 2 north to the Houghton County line, Beechwood Road from U.S. 2 to Basswood Road, Osterlund Road from M 189 to Ski Brule, County Road 657 from U.S. 2 to Gibbs West, Old Atkinson Road and Gendron Road from County Road 657 to the former prison camp, Industrial Park Road including Old U.S. 141 from U.S. 141 in section 22 to Industrial Park Road and Warner Mine Road north .4 miles from Industrial Park Road and County Road 424 from the east Gaastra City limit to the west Alpha Village limit and east Alpha Village limit to U.S. 2, Corral Road, Camp 5 Road from Lower Dam Road to the Dickinson County line and Lower Dam Road from Camp 5 Road west .32 miles.
Restrictions on M-73 went into effect March 22, Tomasoski said.
