CASPIAN—At its Jan. 9 re-organizational meeting, the Caspian City Council elected Gary Sabol as the new mayor. Sabol will replace Mark Stauber who held the seat for the last two years. Colleen Smetak was named mayor pro-tempore after a nomination from Stauber and support from Commissioner Jody Menghini.
Commissioner representation on various committees is unchanged. Stauber remains the commission’s representative on the community center recreation committee. The Caspian-Gaastra Fire Authority representatives are Stauber and Smetak. Sabol is on the cemetery committee and is the police department representative. Commissioner Tony Dallavalle is on the recreation board and, along with Menghini, also represents the city commission on the multi-purpose building committee.
The Board of Review is currently in need of one member, which will be advertised for.
The city will continue to retain the legal services of attorney Steve Polich, while Scott Kenney remains the city’s accountant.
The commission heard a presentation from the Iron Conservation District’s new Forestry Assistance Program forester, Tyler Wood. Wood explained the purpose of the program, which assists non-industrial private forest landowners better understand the potential productivity of their forest resource and opportunities for technical and financial help for forest planning management.
