CRYSTAL FALLS—The showdown among the Upper Peninsula’s strongest takes place at noon this Saturday.
It’s the annual U.P. Strongman Competition, part of Fungus Fest, taking place Aug. 4 at the Runkle Lake Park softball diamond.
For the first time, spectators will have to pay admission to attend the event, but they will be getting a lot for their money. Instead of sitting in the bleachers outside the softball field, they will be inside the fence, with all the strongman events taking place right in front of them.
A full concessions stand will be open all day, and after the trophies are presented, it will be time for some music by Lock and Load.
Competition takes place in five divisions: men’s featherweight (up to 175 pounds), lightweight (up to 200), middleweight (up to 230), heavyweight (over 230) and a women’s open division. Trophies will go to the top three in each division.
The events are the stone and farmer’s walk, overhead lift medley, yoke carry, a combination tire flip plus stone over bar and a medley event (wheelbarrow load, Conan wheel and tire chain lift).
It’s not too late to join the competition. The entry fee will be $25 on the day of the event. All competitors must be 16 or older, and minors need parental consent.
The event is presented by Friends of Forest Park Football, and all proceeds will go to the Trojan football program.
