IRON RIVER—Austin Waara had a nice spring for West Iron County sports teams. One day after he earned his third consecutive U.P. tennis championship, he finished fifth overall in the Division 2 U.P. boys golf finals, played in Newberry June 1.
Waara fired a 76 to lead the Wykon boys, who placed eighth overall.
St. Ignace’s Patrick Sweeney won medalist honors with a round of 71. Carter Hendricks of L’Anse was second at 73, L’Anse’s Tristan Leaf and Norway’s Austin Hansen tied for third at 75, and Waara and Hancock’s Brett Hauswirth tied for fifth at 76.
Other Wykons taking part were Joe Schmidt (96), Matt Schmidt (104) and Austin Atanasoff (105). With just four golfers, all four scores counted for West Iron’s team score of 381.
St. Ignace won the team title with a score of 307, followed by Norway and Hancock, tied for second at 318.
• West Iron’s girls team took third place in the girls Division 2 U.P. Finals, also held June 1 at Newberry.
Olivia Han’s 100 led the Wykons, who finished with a score of 456. Westwood won the team title with 411, and Bark River-Harris was second at 451.
Along with Han, the Wykons got 108 from Madalyn Connon, 123 from Madeline Waara, 125 from Megan Eagloski and 129 from Mallory Tomasoski.
Westwood’s Megan Manninen was medalist with an 87, and teammate Berkley Lafreniere was runner-up at 90.
