Pellizzer leads WIC girls to 3rd at West Pac meet PDF Print E-mail

IRON RIVER—Joanna Pellizzer recorded a first place and two thirds as she led West Iron County’s girls track team at the West Pac Conference meet, held May 23 in Calumet.
 Pellizzer won the 300-meter low hurdles and claimed third in both the 100 highs and the 200 dash.


 For the most part, the West Pac’s two Division 1 teams, Calumet and Houghton, dominated the meet. Calumet took the team title with 135 points, and Houghton was right behind them at 118. The Wykons finished a strong third place with 68.
 Pellizzer’s win in the 300 low hurdles was WIC’s only first place of the day, but the Wykons finished a close second in three others.
 The 1600 relay was 1.1 seconds behind first place Houghton; Jaclyn Waara was a half second behind Calumet’s Tara Kilunen in the 800; and Megan Miatech’s shot put was two inches short of Houghton’s Mackenzie Hietala.
 Besides Pellizzer, other Wykons finishing third were Sydnie Mazurek in the 300 low hurdles, Cassilyn Pellizzer in the 400, Ashley Capadagli in pole vault and the 3200 relay.
 Miatech, Mazurek and Alexis Golfis all had a pair of top-five finishes for West Iron.

 The Wykon boys’ best results at the conference meet came from its relays: All four of them placed. The 3200, 800 and 1600 relays all took third place, and the 400 team was fourth.
 In individual events, no Wykon finished better than fifth, as Calumet (157.5 team points) and Houghton (141) dominated the meet. The Wykons were fourth with 18 points, a half point behind third place Hancock.
