IRON RIVER—Austin Waara tied for runner-up medalist honors and led West Iron’s boys golf team to a tie for fourth place at the Division 2 U.P. Finals, held at Norway’s Oak Crest course on May 29.
L’Anse’s Tristen Leaf was medalist with a 74, and Waara, a senior, fired a 77, as did Norway’s Austin Hansen and Hancock’s Kyle Hauswirth.
Hancock (324) won the team title by one stroke over Norway (325), with Iron Mountain (330) taking third. West Iron finished in a fourth place tie with L’Anse at 349.
Riley Thomson, a freshman, shot an 89 for the Wykons, and was 19th place overall. They were followed by three sophomores, Kyle Maki (24th, 91), Alec Schmelebeck (26th, 92) and Max Maloney (28th, 95).
• Freshman Erin Angeli had the best score among West Iron’s girls at the U.P. Finals, with an 18-hole score of 128—she was 19th overall. Monica Eagloski, a junior, shot 130 and was 22nd, and freshman Megan Quayle finished 29th.
West Iron did not have enough golfers to compile a team score. Iron Mountain (421) won the team title, followed by Ironwood (458) and Manistique (466).
IM teammates Katelynn Johnson and Cassie Feira both shot 96.
