Wykons start, end week with wins

CALUMET/IRON RIVER—For the West Iron County boys basketball team, the week began with a rousing and rather controversial victory over Kingsford. It ended with an important road victory over West Pac foe Calumet.
The middle game against Northland Pines? Well, the Wykons would just as soon forget about that one.
So in the end, West Iron coach Dan Schive said he’ll take the results as a whole after his team knocked off the Copper Kings 49-44 on Feb. 9 to stay unbeaten in the conference and take over sole possession of first heading down the stretch.
“My response is if we would have played with at least a little of the effort (we had tonight) last night, it would have been a closer game,” Schive said, referring to his team’s 73-41 home loss to Northland Pines. “I don’t know if we would have won it the way they shot the ball last night, but I guess if I have to win a game, I would have rather have won this one tonight.
    “It’s a bounce-back from a really bad performance.”
