Wykons spill FP in four sets

IRON RIVER—For two teams still searching to build some consistency and momentum as the volleyball season heads into its second half, the opening set of the West Iron County-Forest Park match on Sept. 25 seemed significant.
Which team was going to establish a quick foothold in the match between the county rivals? And would that momentum even last, given both teams’ difficulties in sustaining high levels of play so far this campaign?
Turns out it was the Wykons who sprung in front. And though they surrendered that early advantage in the second set, they regained control in the third and went on to defeat the Lady Trojans 25-12, 14-25, 25-19, 25-22 at Charles Greenlund Gymnasium.
Both coach Brenda Grubbs and senior middle Katie Fredrickson said the quick first-set victory was key.
“For us that’s huge because we’ve been in a losing trend,” Grubbs said.
“I know that we tried to keep our energy level up really high,” Fredrickson said. “We struggle with that, but we tried to focus on that really hard tonight.”
