Wykons sixth in Westwood meet
ISHPEMING—West Iron County’s girls cross country team traveled to Ishpeming on Oct. 2 and placed sixth in the Westwood Invitational.
The Wykons finished with 132 points, three shy of fifth-place Calumet. Hancock and Houghton finished with 44 points each to lead the way, followed by Ishpeming (61) and Kingsford (101).
Zoe Kolenda paced the Wykons, finishing 18th in 23:14. Jordan Shamion finished 23rd in 23:53 and Avery Bociek wound up 27th in 24:17.
Other West Iron runners included Hailee Bradshaw (38th in 26:23), Piper Passamani (42nd in 29:48) and Rudi Passamani (43rd in 30:09).
Emily Paupore of Negaunee won the individual title with a 19:29. However, the Miners did not field enough runners to qualify for the team competition.
West Iron was scheduled to host its invitational on Monday, but the event was cancelled because of a lack of complete teams to participate. WIC athletic director Mike Berutti said some of the teams scheduled to compete are dealing with illness and injuries causing low numbers.
The Wykons are scheduled to travel to the West Pac Conference meet on Thursday in Hancock.
