Wykons hold off Miners for third straight win
IRON RIVER—A common trait of West Iron County football coach Mike Berutti’s teams through the years is that they will play hard and tough.
Through four games, this year’s team has been no different. In fact, Berutti went one step further after his squad held off the Gogebic Miners 25-16 on Sept. 15 in foggy Ironwood.
“They play as hard as any team I’ve had,” Berutti said. “I told them I don’t question their effort. Gogebic played real well, and it was a hard-fought game. Our kids fought hard, played with a lot of effort and put up a great fight.”
They needed that effort against a game Miners team that battled the Wykons (3-1, 2-0) to the wire. The Ironwood-Bessemer-Wakefield-Marenisco co-op squad (1-3, 1-3) stood just one point in back of West Iron with under a minute to play before Neil Tomasoski hit Caden Pellizzer on a 21-yard touchdown pass on fourth down for the clinching score.
With the win and Hancock’s loss to L’Anse, the Wykons moved into a first-place tie with the Purple Hornets in the West Pac Conference.
