Wykons hit the ground running, outrace Mustangs

IRON RIVER—With a new quarterback and a rebuilt offensive line, the West Iron County Wykons entered their season opener against Munising needing some early success to calm nerves and instill confidence.    They got it. West Iron took the opening kickoff and drove 80 yards on 13 plays to grab a quick lead en route to a 28-6 romp over the Mustangs in a nonconference battle at Nelson Field on. 29.    The victory was the Wykons’ 12th straight regular-season triumph. They have not lost a regular-season game since Oct. 5, 2012.    Junior fullback Jake Polich capped off the six-minute opening drive with a 3-yard run. The entire drive was accomplished on the ground, as Polich accounted for 31 yards, senior Alec Schmelebeck contributed 23 and senior Brandon Olson had eight.
