Wykons fend off Panthers By Jerry DeRoche

IRON RIVER—With the multiple invitational tournaments dotting the schedules of prep volleyball teams, teams usually get a good look at their upcoming dual-match opponents at some point.
Not so with West Iron’s matchup against Chassell on Oct. 6. The teams did not see each other prior to the match at Charles Greenlund Gymnasium, so Wykon coach Brenda Grubbs was left to depend on previous years for an impression of the Panthers.
“It’s hard to say from year to year, because we see Chassell just once and you never know what’s coming,” Grubbs said. “But it was what I kind of expected.”
Which was a West Iron victory. Despite some hangover fatigue from the day-long trip to the NMU Invitational three days prior and the possible distraction of Homecoming Week activities, the Wykons came out of the chute fast and subdued Chassell 25-4, 25-18, 25-12.
It was West Iron’s second dual-match victory against four losses. The Wykons finished 5-1 in pool play at the NMU Invite before losing to Kingsford in bracket play.
Against Chassell, Katilee Rhino supplied 10 kills, while Erin Angeli added six kills and eight aces as the Wykons took care of business against their Mountain Lakes Conference opponent.
West Iron ran off the first 12 points on the match, sparked by five aces from Angeli, and Chassell never recovered in the first set. The Panthers did respond in the second set, however, snatching an early 10-3 lead before the Wykons recovered to win 22 of the final 30 points to go up two sets.
