Wykons earn 4th in invite
Avery Bociek leads a large group of runners past a line of trees during the cross country meet at Iron River Country Club. The Wykon freshman finished 12th overall.
IRON RIVER—Cross country is one of those sports that can make for rather easy prognostications. Unless something out of the ordinary comes up, the runners’ times usually don’t fluctuate that much.
So the West Iron County Wykons co-op team knew that first place was not in the cards at its invitational Oct. 9 at Nelson Field. That was going to go to Chassell. But coach Kristi Berutti felt that if all her runners had good days, they might be able to finish runner-up.
Turns out, the Wykons had some good times but not enough for them to take second behind Chassell, which finished well in front of everyone else with 27 points. Calumet took second with 90, followed by Houghton with 93 and West Iron with 98. Hancock (110), Dollar Bay (137) and Gogebic (159) rounded out the field.
