Wykons drop five-setter at IM

IRON RIVER—West Iron County and Iron Mountain went back-and-forth in their West Pac Conference volleyball matchup on Oct. 11. But in the end, it was the Mountaineers who remained standing, scoring a 25-12, 14-25, 25-14, 22-25, 15-6 victory.
    Courtney Reitmeyer led the Wykon attack with 12 kills, while Riley Stine added seven and Mya Grubbs chipped in with six.
    “Courtney, Mya and Riley led the way with their determined play,” WIC coach Brenda Grubbs said. “The team never gave up and battled Iron Mountain all night. They hustled, attacked the ball and worked hard all night.”
    Stine recorded 48 set assists and Grubbs added 40. Grubbs led West Iron (3-6 in dual matches) with 16 digs, with Stine contributing 14. Stine recorded three aces and Reitmeyer logged two solo blocks.
    West Iron participated in the Houghton Invitational on Oct. 13, but no results were reported by press time.
    West Iron embarks on a busy stretch this week. The Wykons faced Norway on Monday before traveling to Forest Park on Tuesday and L’Anse on Thursday.
