Wykons in driver’s seat after routing Calumet
Jayce Brockhagen lunges for an extra yard during West Iron’s 53-20 win over Calumet at Nelson Field on Sept. 29.
IRON RIVER—Regardless of what happens the rest of the football season, the West Iron County Wykons can always look back at the night of Sept. 29 as one fun time at the ball field.
Playing their first home game in nearly a month, the Wykons scored early and often and never let up en route to a 53-20 thrashing of Calumet at Nelson Field. By virtue of the win and L’Anse’s loss to Gogebic, West Iron (5-1, 4-0) stands alone atop the West Pac Conference and is one win away from clinching a playoff spot after its fifth straight victory.
“The best performance we’ve had all year,” WIC coach Mike Berutti said. “The kids were ready, they were focused. It was nice to be home.”
Senior lineman Brandon Henschel said the performance was the result of a good week of preparation.
“It started with a great week of practice. Last week (a 7-0 win over then-winless Houghton) was a little iffy, but we came out Monday on fire.”
