Wykons coast past Emeralds
IRON RIVER— At one point last week, the West Iron County football players didn’t even know if they were going to have a game on Friday or not. With Manistique struggling with low numbers and injuries and having forfeited its previous game, the Wykons began their preparation week in a state of limbo.
Turns out the Emeralds were able to field a team after all, but not one that could contend with West Iron as the Wykons embarked on the nearly 150-mile drive and dispatched the hosts 41-0 in a West Pac Conference Iron Division contest.
The outcome was never in doubt. The Wykons (3-0, 3-0) scored four touchdowns in the first quarter and coasted from there.
“We talked all week about that (Manistique) didn’t play last week, and it was in the back of (our players’) minds, ‘Are we going to play?’” WIC coach Mike Berutti said. “And it’s a long bus ride.
“So I tried to tell them, ‘This is a game we’re supposed to win, so let’s take care of business’ and I thought the kids did that real well.”
