Wykons beat nemesis to extend run to 13
West Iron center Emily Nelson splits a pair of Calumet defenders on her way to the hoop in the Wykons’ 45-41 win over the Copper Kings on Feb. 14.
IRON RIVER—If there has been a nemesis for the West Iron County Wykons girls basketball program in recent years, it’s been the Calumet Copper Kings.
During some recent lean years, several opponents had extended success against West Iron, but the current Wykons have put on end to most of that in the last couple of seasons.
Except for Calumet, and even this year when the Wykons came into the season with lofty expectations both within the West Pac Conference and outside of it.
In the first matchup of this season back in early December, the Copper Kings beat West Iron 58-50, one of only two teams to defeat the top-ranked Wykons this year. West Iron was without starting wing Colbi Laturi in that game as she continued rehabbing from offseason foot surgery.
The return matchup with the Copper Kings came on Feb. 14 at Charles Greenlund Gymnasium. And if you think the Wykons didn’t have that date circled on the calendar for the last two months, well, you don’t understand competitive athletics.
