Wykon spikers rebound with win over Hancock

IRON RIVER—While there was still time on the schedule for the West Iron County volleyball team to steady itself after four consecutive losses, the Wykons’ match against visiting Hancock on Oct. 10 was a vital one for the team’s confidence as the season heads toward the districts.
Having defeated the Bulldogs in the teams’ previous meeting, West Iron had an excellent opportunity to win its first dual match since mid-September and put some recent disappointing losses to rest with another victory over Hancock. Although there were some tense moments, the Wykons were able to do just that, knocking off Hancock 25-17, 21-25, 25-19, 25-21 in a West Pac Conference match at Charles Greenlund Gymnasium.
“The win is definitely good for us,” senior outside hitter Breanna Kemppainen said. “We needed that.”
“We needed this win to build on,” added WIC coach Brenda Grubbs. “It’s been a while. (Concentration) was much better tonight, and there was fire on the floor.”
The Wykons were engaged in the match from the start and took control of the first set midway through. Middle hitter Rachael Tefft sparked a 6-0 stretch with three blocks, a kill and a tip to put her team up 19-11. Kemppainen, Katie Frederickson and Riley Stine added kills down the stretch to help West Iron take the first set.
