Wykon girls end losing streaks
IRON RIVER—No team wants to live through one losing streak, let alone two. Now the West Iron County Wykons don’t have to anymore.
The Wykons halted their five-game skid overall and a 12-game streak in the West Pac Conference with a 57-52 triumph at L’Anse on Feb. 9. West Iron led wire-to-wire against the Purple Hornets to secure its third victory of the season.
“We were on a bit of a losing streak (in the conference),” Wykons coach Joe Serbentas said. “Last year, the conference was real strong, and most teams had everybody back while we lost players (to graduation). So we kind of knew we were in for it for awhile, but it’s nice to get the monkey off our back and get a win in conference.”
West Iron’s last West Pac victory also came over L’Anse on Feb. 18, 2013.
This time, the Wykons (3-13, 1-4) grabbed an early eight-point lead, built their advantage to as much as 17 at the end of the third quarter and held on down the stretch.
“We came out of the blocks pretty fast,” Serbentas said. “We played pretty well on defense for the first three quarters. We contested their shots and they looked a little nervous when they shot because of the pressure we put on them.
“Their coach (Scott Lloyd) said our speed was a little too much for them to handle.”
Erin Angeli got things rolling offensively in the early going with five of West Iron’s first seven points. Emmy Kinner knocked down consecutive hoops to give the Wykons a 13-5 edge, and L’Anse never got within five the rest of the way.
Angeli and Kinner paced a balanced Wykon scoring attack with 14 points each. Alexis Golfis added nine, while Ariel Gallup chipped in with eight and Taby Andreski scored seven.
