Wykon girls 3rd in CC opener
IRON RIVER—The West Iron County girls cross country team placed four runners in the top 20 and finished third as a team in its season-opening meet at the North Central Invitational.
Leading the way was junior Zoe Kolenda, who took 13th in a time of 25:55. Kali Dennis was next up for West Iron with a 26:24, good for 15th. Hailee Bradshaw (27:12) wound up 19th, while Madison Berutti (28:18) finished 20th.
Also competing for the Wykon girls were Aurora Dahl (21st in 28:58), Emily Nelson (26th in 31:45) and Kali Applin (28th in 33:50).
Kingsford won the girls championship with 30 points, while Mid Peninsula finished runner up with 43. West Iron finished with 88 points and was followed by Rapid River at 104, Munising at 122, Norway at 125 and North Central at 151.
Daisy Englund of Mid Pen won the individual title in 20:56, almost a minute faster that teammate Landry Koski. The Flivvers took the next four spots.
West Iron also had one boy and two junior varsity girls compete. Mason Starkey ran a 26:50 to place 23rd in the boys competition, while Mackenzee Benson ran a 34:15 for sixth and Lexi Razo ran a 37:03 to place ninth in the girls JV race.
West Iron finished sixth in the six-team boys competition with 149 points. Rapid River edged Norway by one point to win the boys team title with 36 points.
Norway’s Adam Cavagnetto won the individual title easily in a time of 17:54, almost two minutes faster than his nearest competitor.
The Wykon JV girls finished 33 points in back of Kingsford in the two-team JV girls competition.
West Iron was scheduled to return to action on Tuesday at the Kingsford Invite.
