Wykon boys runner-up in Division 2 net finals
IRON RIVER—The West Iron County boys tennis team entered the 2019 season with significant holes in its lineup due to graduation losses. But the new varsity players inserted into the lineup adapted quickly and, in the end, the Wykons put together another successful season.
In its last two events of the season, West Iron defended its Great Northern Conference championship and fell just short of repeating as U.P. Division 2 champions, losing to Westwood by just one point.
In the U.P. Finals on May 29, the Wykons earned three flight championships and four runner-up finishes and wound up with 17 points. Westwood won four flight championships and took second in three others.
Munising took third in the team standings with nine points in front of Iron Mountain (5), Ishpeming (2) and Gwinn (1).
Holden Ross repeated as the U.P. Division 2 No. 1 singles champion after dispatching Mason Schiedling of Munising 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals and then rolling over Adam Hyttinen of Westwood 6-1, 6-0 in the finals.
No. 2 singles James Swanson also registered two straight-set wins, defeating Jared Rowland of Gwinn 6-3, 6-2 and Anthony Couveau of Westwood 6-3, 6-4.
The other West Iron championship came from No. 4 doubles Cole Alexa and Lucas Shovald who were paired together late in the year and went on a tear. The duo outlasted Taylor Borowski and Alex VanZandt of Munising 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 before defeating top-seeded Austin Brewer and Ryan LaFountain of Westwood 6-4, 6-2 in the finals.
No. 3 singles Mitch Ballinger took second after routing Dawson Emanuelson of Ishpeming 6-0, 6-0 before falling to Chad Pohlman of Westwood 6-1, 6-1.
