WIC sweeps U.P. golf titles; FP girls runner-up
IRON RIVER—A golf season that began with big expectations ended in triumph for the West Iron County golf teams.
Both Wykon squads captured U.P. Division 2 championships on a sun-splashed but windy day at Young’s Golf Course, while junior Trey Bociek repeated as U.P. champion and junior Mya Grubbs finished runner-up for individual girls champion.
Meanwhile, the Forest Park girls placed second to West Iron in the team competition. The Trojan boys competed in the Division 3 event in Gladstone (separate story).
In the boys event, the Wykons had four of the top seven finishers and finished at 319, 17 strokes in front of runner-up Norway. Bociek paced his team with a 74, while Nathan Thomson finished tied for third with a 78, Peyton Williams won a playoff to finish fifth with an 83 and Noah Thomson shot an 84.
Norway’s Drew Anderson carded a 77 to finish three strokes in back of Bociek for medalist.
Bociek’s round started with a bogie, but he quickly regained his footing and took over on the back nine.
“I had a few birdies on the back and I just played pretty good all-around,” the junior said.
Bociek said his 2019 season was almost a repeat of his sophomore year, which ended with a U.P. title with, again, a 74.
“I started off the season pretty strong in the first meet and was just kind of average the rest of the season,” he said. “And then saved it all for the last one. I did the same thing last year, so I knew I could pull myself together at the end here.”
West Iron coach Mark Martini said Bociek has one of the smoothest golf strokes around.
“I use him as a key for everybody to watch,” Martini said. “Now his grandpa and his dad have said it’s all due to hockey, not to coaching or anything.”
