WIC gets 1st win, hammer Red Devils 43-8
IRON RIVER—After three straight defeats to start the season, the West Iron Wykons were desperately seeking their first victory, and they got it by hammering host Ironwood 43-8 in a West Pac Conference matchup on Sept. 18.
Jake Polich and Shae Parson ran for two touchdowns each to lead the Wykons (1-3, 1-1) to the rout. A.J. Weisnicht added a touchdown reception, and Phil King tacked on a punt return score as West Iron rolled to the much-needed triumph.
“I’m happy for the guys,” West Iron coach Mike Berutti said. “They needed a morale boost, and a burden has been lifted from their shoulders. They’ve put in a lot of time and effort, and they deserved to win.”
The Wykons didn’t waste any time putting the Red Devils (0-4, 0-3) on their heels. On its first possession, West Iron drove 68 yards on eight plays to log its first score on an 18-yard run by Polich.
The drive came after Ironwood started quickly with runs of 13 and 12 yards on its first two plays.
But after adjusting to the Red Devils’ wishbone formation, the Wykons stymied the hosts until the game was well out of hand.
“Once we settled down, we played well defensively,” Berutti said. “The defensive linemen made a lot more plays, and that was good to see.”
After forcing a three-and-out, the Wykons grabbed a two-touchdown lead when King torched the Ironwood punt coverage unit for a 79-yard TD return.
