WIC boys team sweeps IM 8-0

IRON RIVER—West Iron County’s boys tennis team recorded an 8-0 clean sweep during its match against a young Iron Mountain team in Iron Mountain on May 1.
    The match was played in sunny, breeze conditions.
    West Iron’s singles victories were earned by Neil Tomasoski (first singles), Holden Ross (2S), Bernie Forte (3S) and Nolan Anderson (4S). Anderson won by forfeit, and the other three were in straight sets. Ross lost just one game, and Forte lost only three.
    In doubles, the wins went to Brandon Henschel-Kevin Ballinger (1D), Tyler McCarthy-James Swanson (2D), Steven Nelson-Caden Pellizzer (3D) and Christian Benson-Mitch Ballinger (4D). Four more straight set wins; Nelson and Pellizzer pitched a double shutout, and the third and fourth doubles duos both won their second sets by a 6-0 score.
    Henschel and Kevin Ballinger dug deep to win their first set 7-5 and followed with a 6-2 triumph.
    “All the flights did an excellent job of focusing on strategy during the matches,” WIC coach Joseph Serbentas said. “We have been stressing the concept of ‘setting up points’ during practices, and the players have really developed an understanding of the importance of angles and deep corner shots.”
    ● The Wykons were scheduled to play at Gwinn on May 2 but the match was postponed.This week, West Iron has meets at Menominee (May 7) and Kingsford (May 9) before the Kingsford Invitational on May 12. The team travels to Ishpeming May 14 before the first two home meets of the year at Nelson Field: May 15 vs. Negaunee and May 16 vs. Marquette.
