WIC’s Tefft, Schram win events at D2 track finals

KINGSFORD—West Iron’s throwers have been the stars of the Wykon track team all season, and they were again at the Division 2 U.P. Finals, held at Kingsford High School on June 2.
Senior Rachael Tefft won both the girls discus and shot put championships, while junior Bryant Schram won the boys shot and took third in discus.
Both were West Iron’s top athletes at the U.P. Finals. The girls team finished fourth in the team standings, while the boys came in eighth.
Tefft had a pair of very different victories. In shot put, her throw of 36 feet, 6.5 inches won the title by over 2 feet over Hancock’s Katherine Jarvis, whose best was 34-3.25.
But her victory in discus was anything but clear-cut. Tefft’s best throw was 112-7, while Jarvis’ best effort came up short by less than an inch—112-6.2 in the official report.
Regardless, it’s two U.P. titles for Tefft in her senior year. She was third in both events in the 2017 U.P. Finals.
