Westwood earns 5-3 win over WIC

IRON RIVER—For West Iron County’s girls tennis team, the priority right now is getting ready for the end-of-season tournaments, which are coming up very soon.
Just before a short Labor Day break, the Wykons lost at home to Westwood 5-3 on Aug. 29 but came back with a 7-1 win over Gladstone on Aug. 31. That gave the team a 6-2-1 record in dual matches entering last week.
The battle with Westwood was West Iron’s only dual match against the Patriots this season. Last year at the U.P. Division 2 Finals, Westwood and Munising tied for the team title, with the Wykons two points behind in third. The Patriots host this year’s U.P. Finals in two weeks.
“We feel as a team we match up well with Westwood with our full lineup,” WIC coach Joe Serbentas said, “and it will be interesting in the Division 2 U.P.’s.”
