For the first time in many years a new coach, Jen Schive,  is leading the Lady Wykons tennis team and her commitment is impressive.  Dedicating herself to middle school teaching and working in the Special Education Department of West Iron Schools, Schive understands the importance of staying positive and providing opportunities for students.
With limited preseason preparation the Lady Wykons tennis team got off to a challenging start, but is gaining traction. After dropping a number of early season matches, the Wykons gradually narrowed their margin of loss and in the past week convincingly defeated Gladstone on Aug. 24 and followed the victory with a trouncing of Iron Mountain on Aug. 28.
“With only six days of practice before our first match and a tough start to the season, the WIC tennis team is mentally and physically coming together,” Schive said. “Each meet brings us more winning games, and we come out better prepared for each match.”
The Lady Wykon Tennis team got their first win of the season over Gladstone. The Wykons came ready to play and all four singles matches were convincingly won by West Iron.  Aubrey Bice, playing at first singles and Kaitlyn Smith at three singles blanked their opponents 6–0, 6–0.
The No. 2 and No. 4 doubles teams were also victorious. Aubrey Richardson and Kaycee Ingram, playing at second doubles won their match 6–2, 6–3 while Rachel Fenous and Julie White, playing at four doubles, took out their opponents from Gladstone 6–2, 6–4.
The Wykon season will continue with rematches against many of the teams they struggled against early in their schedule. With growing momentum the results of the rematches could very well be reversed.
