IRON RIVER — The West Iron Wykon football program has taken its share of hits this year.  Injuries have plagued a team that is, consequently, playing hard-fought games that go to their opponents.
The trend continued on Oct. 13 when West Iron fell to Ishpeming 32–0. Ishpeming entered the contest with a record of 4–3 and had won their previous three games. Bright spots were difficult to find in the loss, but the spirit of both the Wykon coach and players remained high.
Coach Mike Berutti continues to field a team each week and is committed to finishing the season — which in itself will be an improvement over last year when the team had to cut its season short. Simply fielding a squad for every game will re-establish the team as viable and should be seen as a major accomplishment.
“We will finish the season and next year be back with over 40 guys who love being part of the team and are committed,” Berutti said. “We’ve been through some challenges, but we’ve fielded a team every week and the kids continue to be excited to play.”
The Wykons are 1–7 on the season along with Gwinn and wrapped up their season when they hosted Gwinn on Oct. 20.
