Thomson’s three TDs lift Wykons to road win
IRON RIVER—West Iron County junior running back Nathan Thomson scored three touchdowns and the Wykon defense stymied Lake Linden-Hubbell for much of the game as MHSAA small school second-ranked West Iron defeated the fifth-ranked Lakes 24-16 in a West Pac Conference Iron Division matchup on Oct. 5 in Lake Linden.
LL-H opened the scoring on its opening drive after West Iron (5-1, 4-0) was forced to punt after a long run was nullified by a penalty. The Lakes (3-3, 2-2) got on the scoreboard on a 1-yard run by Caleb Gregoire and his ensuing two-point conversion to take an 8-0 lead with 4:34 to play in the first quarter.
“We just didn’t get off the bus at all,” WIC coach Mike Berutti said.
Despite that, the Wykons did respond to the LL-H touchdown when Thomson burst free on a 46-yard touchdown run to pull his team within two. The two-point conversion failed as West Iron trailed 8-6 heading into the second quarter.
With just under three minutes to play in the half, Thomson culminated a 59-yard, six-play drive with a 12-yard run and after the two-point conversion and the Wykons took a 14-8 advantage into the break.
Thomson had a big day, finishing with 123 yards on 16 carries (7.7 average).
“Nathan ran the ball exceptionally well,” Berutti said. “When he gets out in the open field, he’s tough to catch.”
Early in the third quarter, LL-H fumbled, and West Iron’s Todd Gallup recovered to set his team up in scoring position. The Lakes forced a field goal attempt, but Mario Fidalgo nailed a 25-yarder to push the Wykon lead to 17-8. Fidalgo has become a weapon for Berutti, kicking two field goals in the last two weeks and has been steady kicking extra points.
